TrainGamingKing9928 Posted September 18 Share #454 Posted September 18 Not sure if it’s just me, but as someone who takes the and trains home from school a lot, I’ve recently started to observe fewer R46’s on the . Has this been the case for anyone else?

Has this been the case for anyone else? Same for me, whenever I take the A line I usually see just R179s and R211As which isn’t too surprising considering that there is only around 3-8 sets on the A mostly during rush hour and as for the C, some R46s pop up every now and then.
zacster Posted September 19 Author Share #456 Posted September 19 It's still surprising to me that with all the R211s on the A now they haven't moved more R46s to CI or to another out of the way place for storage until they are officially scrapped. I went by 38th St the other day on my bike and didn't see any there.

I don’t think we’ll see any official scrap moves until the MTA thinks there’s a sufficient amount of R211’s in service to consider the R46 fleet “done.” As for when the scrap moves will start happening, my guess is sometime in early 2025. Yeah, IIRC there's still about 70 R32s left to scrap and the earliest they'll probably be done is the end of the year. They probably won't scrap R46s until they run out of space (so around mid 2025-early 2026ish) and just cannibalize the OOS cars as long as some are still in service (probably at least another year and a half imo). On the other hand I expect the SIR cars to be gone pretty quickly because of space and how decrepit they are. If the pilot set can get through the 30 day test by November, they could probably have all cars in service by January-February and start trucking R44s out during the summer. Maybe they'll restart the reefing program, that would be cool.

Also, I've been seeing more r46s than r179s on the C.

It technically might return to service at some point. Look at R143 cars 8277-8280 (out of service for 10 years) and the damaged R160s 8738-8742 after Hurricane Sandy (out of service for over 5 years)
