Union Tpke Posted April 5, 2020 Share #1 Posted April 5, 2020 I just found these on the Transit Innovation Partnership Signal Partnership page. I haven't looked through them yet, but feel free to post what you find, especially for the R211s. I saved these on the web archive so they are safe from being wiped from the site. https://transitinnovation.org/challenge/signal R142: https://transitinnovation.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/R142 Contract Specification.pdf R142A: https://transitinnovation.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/R142A-Contract-Specifications.pdf R211: https://transitinnovation.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/R211 Tech Spec.pdf

Around the Horn Posted April 6, 2020 Share #3 Posted April 6, 2020 Here's some illustrations of the cab (note the left hand door controls on the dashboard and the third screen for CCTV via leaky feeder)
danielhg121 Posted April 6, 2020 Share #4 Posted April 6, 2020 Is placing the horn button smack dab in the center of the console a good idea? I feel like the train operator would hit something they're not supposed to when reaching for it. I think it's better off to the side like in the 160's.
P3F Posted April 6, 2020 Share #5 Posted April 6, 2020 Interesting. So an train could hypothetically start with: to Coney Island Hillside Av Local Queens Bl Express 63 St/6 Av Local and end with: to Coney Island 6 Av Local via Delancey St Culver Local

So an train could hypothetically start with: to Coney Island Hillside Av Local Queens Bl Express 63 St/6 Av Local and end with: to Coney Island 6 Av Local via Delancey St Culver Local Sounds like someone went to London and rode the Circle Line: "This is a Circle Line train via Liverpool Street and Tower Hill" "This is a Circle Line train via Tower Hill and Embankment" "This is a Circle Line train via Embankment and Victoria" "This is a Circle Line train via Victoria and High Street Kensington" "This is a Circle Line train via High Street Kensington and Paddington" and finally "This is a Circle Line train to Edgware Road" I do believe that the destination signs update along with the announcements. (Also isn't nice to have just one voice doing the announcements? but I digress...) I just hope that NYCT avoids the temptation to have the End Destination Sign update along the route as well or show the lines it's traveling on (like that R211 displaying "Broadway Local" in the ESI renders which feels like eons ago). They should just stick to the destination "Bay Ridge 95 St" so a passenger can identify it quickly at a glance, the only exception being the (which IMO should display "Culver Express" on the top line and "Coney Island" or "Jamaica-179 St" on the bottom line) and lines converging on Coney Island (ex: "Coney Island" over "via Sea Beach" for the ).
Union Tpke Posted April 6, 2020 Author Share #7 Posted April 6, 2020 (edited) Looking through this, I realized how little I had appreciated the work that went into designing cars. All parts of them are ridiculously interconnected, any errors can have fatal consequences. I do not envy the job of the engineers and designers on the project. Here are some more highlights. I took a lot of screenshots. I will post the rest tomorrow. Quote Crime and Anti-Social Behavior – the Contractor shall propose layouts for CCTV cameras in the car’s interior that will optimize visibility (see Section 13 - Communications) and shall provide messaging and signage from worldwide experience targeting security for NYCT review. Quote Personal Space – interior designs shall include means to minimize undesired physical interactions between customers. For example, USB charger layouts should minimize the potential for charging cords to hit or interfere with the seated customer. @RR503 Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 5.54.29 PM by Union Turnpike, on Flickr Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 5.54.38 PM by Union Turnpike, on Flickr Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 5.54.50 PM by Union Turnpike, on Flickr Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 5.54.54 PM by Union Turnpike, on Flickr Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 5.55.02 PM by Union Turnpike, on Flickr Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 5.55.25 PM by Union Turnpike, on Flickr Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 5.58.03 PM by Union Turnpike, on Flickr Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 5.59.11 PM by Union Turnpike, on Flickr This really emphasizes how steep the grades are on the Manhattan Bridge: Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 5.59.25 PM by Union Turnpike, on Flickr Why is the C the worst case route? LED's have gotten small enough to be like large TV pixels. Look closely at the large wall screen in the Apple store by BAM. That would be perfectly fine for the destination signs.

Are those signs rated for transportation use, though? Transportation conditions are a lot harsher than what standard commercial products have to deal with, which is part of why, for example, it took so long for touchscreens to make it to cars. Most notably in that space, Teslas are now known for reliability issues, because when they first came out the 17-inch touchscreens in the car were not rated for automotive use.
