TheNewYorkElevated Posted January 21, 2017 Share #4 Posted January 21, 2017 Isn't this a few years late? Yes. I really didn't see this coming, it was so soon.
BayParkwayW Posted January 21, 2017 Share #5 Posted January 21, 2017 Any word on when demolition starts for Nassau and Atlantic?
P3F Posted January 21, 2017 Share #6 Posted January 21, 2017 Atlantic and Nassau were locked up shortly after the last trains scheduled to stop there had left. There were no trains that stopped at all three stations.

P3F Posted January 21, 2017 Share #9 Posted January 21, 2017 Were there any railfans on the first train? No. I shot a video of the first train, but did not get onto it. I don't know about the first train, but it was absolutely empty this afternoon... It was empty in the morning as well.
trainfan22 Posted January 22, 2017 Share #10 Posted January 22, 2017 Riding the first train could have been a double whammy as one might have rode the smaller SI Ferry boats that only run during the overnight hours, I don't think most people in the fan community been on them. I would thought this being a new outdoor station alone would generate a decent amount of fanfare, as we probably won't see a new outdoor NYC Subway ever again unless it get to a point where the EL's have to be torn down and outright replaced with a new structure. I hate those 2 damn baby boats. If you're lucky enough, they'll use one of the small ones and a big one overnight.

I ride them all the time. Two years living in St George I think only one time DOT used the Noble and Austen at the same time overnight.
P3F Posted January 22, 2017 Share #13 Posted January 22, 2017 You can get a sense of how many people were in that neck of Staten Island at the time from the videos in this thread: http://www.nyctransitforums.com/forums/topic/50040-the-end-of-one-era-and-the-start-of-another-1/
RailBus63 Posted January 22, 2017 Share #14 Posted January 22, 2017 It's really more of a commuter rail stop, except the line is served by subway cars. There's usually not a huge fanfare when a new station in a relatively remote suburban area is opened.
Union Tpke Posted January 23, 2017 Author Share #15 Posted January 23, 2017 I was there today. The overpasses at Nassau and Atlantic are still open, and at the latter two teens were doing cocaine. They should close those overpasses down to prevent this.

Union Tpke Posted January 23, 2017 Author Share #17 Posted January 23, 2017 The overpasses are DOT property and needed to allow people to cross over the tracks. They'll never close them. I had a feeling that they were needed. They are in horrible condition and people will continue to use them in the way that I described. They should really be replaced. I wonder when they will demolish the Nassau and Atlantic stations.

They should close those overpasses down to prevent this. lol... Closing them down will just move them somewhere else. The South Shore in particular has a serious drug problem, and there are meth heads all over the place. If they weren't there they would be somewhere along Hylan Blvd (they already are). Would just be more of them...

Around the Horn Posted January 31, 2017 Share #22 Posted January 31, 2017 Anybody know if ball park is going to reopen? If it were going to reopen, it would probably be in 2018/19 when the New York Wheel and that outlet mall open. Ball Park is directly underneath. Mtatransit Posted January 31, 2017 Share #23 Posted January 31, 2017 Isn't the ballpark Station like a 5 min walk from St George? Connected by a nice riverwalk?

Im not sure, because I'm almost never around there, but I do think the river walk will become part of the mall/wheel complex. Nevertheless, a weekend shuttle might be a good idea. Nevertheless, a weekend shuttle might be a good idea. If you look at the view here: http://www.earthcam.net/projects/newyorkwheel/ You can see that the NY Wheel construction site is just northwest of the western end of Ballpark station. If you look at the left edge of the camera view, you can see the elevator heading to Ballpark's platform (since that station is ADA-accessible).
