What on earth is happening with the units on Staten Island? Yonkers is about to burst with all these R211S production sets with no word on what's going on.

I guess there are still issues going on with the pilot r211S. Plus, the train crew in SIR have to be trained since this will be their first time operating NTTs.

I wouldn't be surprised if the MTA is more focused on the r211As than the r211Ss.

The R-211S (SIR) Pilot Set is currently at St. George on the far right platform. Lots of testing equipment on the inside in the first car (104 facing North). Computers, many wires, a stand-up fan and a jobmaster chest (construction box).

The pilot R211S has to go through a process similar to what the pilot R211A and R211T went through. I see the R211S entering service sometime in October or November.

Surprised they delivered it before the pilot went into service

This has happened before, notably with Miami's Metrorail where the second new Hitachi trainset delivered became the first to debut in service and the pilot set had so many issues it eventually entered service years later as the last trainset to debut after the remainder of the order was delivered and in service.

Curious to know if the cab signaling issues with the R-211S are similar to Miami's troubles with their Hitachis where track circuit signaling conflicts with the train's computer program, notably also putting the train into Emergency at different spots along the line (Brakes dump, all signs lose station location and just display "Metrorail") and especially having to dump and reset multiple times when single tracking, placing the train in different modes just to proceed. The original Budd cars were directly compatible with the track circuit signaling without any issues while the new Hitachis STILL to this day experience signal trouble and compatibility problems along the line despite all new cars now in service, still going into BIE at different locations.

I'm not a technician nor know much about cab signaling but the above is what I have observed in Miami when it comes to placing new trains into service on a line where the signal system and new trainsets have compatibility issues taking an extensive time to resolve and curious if the R-211S is experiencing similar trouble.

Can someone explain what’s happening with R211 4309? I’m hearing wild stories from it falling off the trailer to striking the top of a bridge…so which is it?

Looking at the video linked below, you can clearly see a dent as well as other damage to the roof around the 1:07 mark, so this was likely the original 4309. If I had to guess what happened, something probably hit it.

But this all has me wondering, why on earth are they going through the hassle of replacing the ENTIRE car just because of some seemingly minor damage? I don’t see how something like that could negatively impact the structural integrity of the car.
