R211 Discussion Thread

East New York

I would love to see Hitachi build subway cars for us, I think their designs for Washington DC and Philadelphia are really nice but I would encourage you all to keep an eye on Siemens who just moved forward on an upstate New York plant, initially for Brightline West's HSR trains, expected to open in 2026. Depending on the size of the plant, it could also handle building subway cars at the same time.

The R211s running on the (C) was gonna happen anyways with CBTC operations on the 8th Ave coming soon, they want all lines to carry 60’ subway cars, whether it’s 8 or 10 car lengths. With 150 cars (or less) left to be delivered, the (A) gets first dibs on the R211s, eventually all cars will ultimately operate on the (C) since Pitkin Yard is 1/2 home to both lines. The 207th-M is the other spot.

Honestly I think they should order a third option order if they can, even if the the whole early retirement fiasco for the R44s hadn't happened the delays in the R179s would have still been a problem. Better to get newer cars earlier than later

Pretty sure this was already mentioned somewhere, but the "third option" of 355 train cars will be put under a separate contract (or what would be called R268s at this time, the capital plan didn't give an official contract number to my knowledge). This is akin to the R179s and how they supplement the R160s.

Actually, it will be by the summer of next year

It won't be, the (A) has the 13 R179s (shared withe the (S)) plus 28 R211A's (now shared with the (C)) It'll be before the summer the (A) will be fully tech. The last sets of R46's would probably end on the (C) before being retired or sent to coney island. The (A) uses around 38 to 40 sets. Without spares or sharing R179s with the (S), The (A) can be 100% tech right now. The R46's are practically Spares or put-ins for the (A) While the (C) uses the majority of them.
