Union Tpke Posted December 8, 2014 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2014 NYC Transit Prepping for Heavy Rain Select Language▼ December 08th, 2014 With the threat that a soaking nor’easter could dump up to three inches of rain early this week and send winds of 40 to 50 mph gusting across the region, MTA New York City Transit has already canvassed the system cleaning drains, removing trash and making repairs. New York City Transit has dispatched additional cleaning crews to keep the track areas free and clear of any debris that could clog drains and allow a build-up of water significant enough to stop service. “We depend on forecasting services to give us a heads up when inclement weather is heading our way and then we are able to effectively deploy the personnel and equipment needed to keep service moving,” said Senior Vice President of Subways Joseph Leader. Even without rainfall, NYC Transit pumps more than 13 million gallons of water from the underground portions of the system. For the times when weather conditions or a tapped out water main adversely affect the system, NYC Transit maintains a trio of pump trains capable of evacuating 300 gallons of water from the system every minute. The Track and Infrastructure Division also has a fleet of portable pumps, some with a pumping capacity of 600 gallons per minute.

Via Garibaldi 8 Posted December 8, 2014 Share #5 Posted December 8, 2014 That snow storm that hit Buffalo was no joke though. True but so far we've had NOTHING here to call for these sorts of reports to be flying around on the website. The last time they pulled the express buses here in Riverdale was because of that imbecile de Blasio not getting on the DOT to shovel our streets up here in the hills. Funny that parts of Riverdale like Fieldston, the Upper East Side and other affluent areas that didn't fully support him didn't have their streets shoveled... What a surprise. Q113 LTD Posted December 9, 2014 Share #6 Posted December 9, 2014 The needs to do something about the subway enterances. Whenever it rains, the staircase looks like a waterfall and rain puddle will form when water from the rain has nowhere to go. People will end up jumping over the large puddle to the staircase or find another way out. They should install subway station canopies.
QM1to6Ave Posted December 9, 2014 Share #7 Posted December 9, 2014 Did they finish turning that (I think) R110 into a pump bar yet?

The powers that be have decided that we need random fluff from time to time talking about how the system is improving. This has been around since at least when Paterson was governor, and like the subway announcements by the NYPD are best ignored. I would rather having them provide information with lots of fluff rather than provide no information at all; the Port Authority, on the other hand, is a public relations mess with the whole bridge scandal and their clamming up post-Sandy about the state of the system's infrastructure. I would rather them not provide the fluff and make sure that the information that they post about commuting was accurate for a change.
MTA Dude Posted December 11, 2014 Share #10 Posted December 11, 2014 If yesterday was what they were preparing for, 2 weeks ago on Monday was just as bad. I came home from school soaked that day, but when it was raining and I went to school, even when the weather was going crazy, I got there pretty dry.
