Trying to get my Dad a job in the Subway as a MotorMan or conductor - any ideas?

Does anyone know if there is a minimum age for the exams? is it a standard 18 or they will not hire till 21?

Eligibility for the examination is always stated in the "Notice of Examination" that comes out before the application period. Anyone 18 (maybe 17?) and up has been allowed to take the exam, but some titles (like Train Operator) have additional work experience requirements that must be met.

Criteria are always subject to change and past results do not guarantee future outcomes. To find out if you're eligible for the next exam, you'll have to wait until it comes out, and read the Notice of Examination to see that you are eligible.

That older Conductor you guys were talking about can move deceivingly well even with that big backpack he carries around on one shoulder, makes excellent announcements and doesn't play around with the doors at stations and gets the job done. A real gentleman too.

Perfect, hes a great climber! When was the last exam?

And what exactly happens in a "SchoolCar?"

I believe there's a test for Motorman coming up later next year, no exact date yet, tell your dad to keep an eye out for it on MTA's website, haven't heard anything about Conductor yet, but it's due hopefully soon. Schoolcar is about rules, regulations and procedures. It's basically a training course with two instructors that will teach your how to be whatever title you applied for.

Nice, theres a R110B set thats a school car right?

If you go to the botttom of http://www.nycsubway.org/wiki/R-110_New_Technology_Test_Program, you'll see the status of the R110B cars.

From what I've learned, school car is located throughout the system in various yards, in which you learn the "rules, regulations and procedures" in a training course for whatever title you applied for (quoted from post #28). If you want to see pictures to get an idea, just click on the following links:

Hopefully this helps.
