ConcourseExp Posted November 21, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 21, 2014 I know how much progress the and Lines have been making, but you think we should go back to old times? - Forest Hills-71 Aveune/ Continental to Coney Island - Stillwell Aveune or Gravesend - 86 Street. - Astoria- Ditmas Blvd to Bay Ridge- 95 Street or 36 Street. RollOver Posted November 21, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 21, 2014 No, because the already has a yard access, which is Coney Island nearby. The needs a yard access, which is Jamaica, east of Continental Avenue. That's why the and are both the way they are now.
NYSubwayBuff Posted November 21, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 21, 2014 Well ignoring everything else for a second, the R would have no yard access and it would have to tun 24/7 cause Astoria is a pretty big corridor and the N would have to run 24/7 because the Sea beach needs the service. So not only your paying for twoce the service at night along with paying money for the R to run lite to the nearest yards which from 95th to Coney island is pretty far

The now has R160 cars, and it takes up less space for the other lines to fit in Jamacia Yard.
RollOver Posted November 21, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 21, 2014 And you need to think about what works from an operations standpoint, rather than a railfan's standpoint.
R32 3838 Posted November 21, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 21, 2014 I rather the stay where its at, nothing would improve if the went back to astoria, like everyone said, yard availability is the biggest reason why the 2 lines swapped terminals, and the only went to forest hills for 10 years when the was replaced in 1977
TrainFanInfinity Posted November 21, 2014 Share #7 Posted November 21, 2014 What exactly would be the "benefit" of rush hours??? I can't see one.

46Dover Posted November 22, 2014 Share #9 Posted November 22, 2014 Unless the makes the a new yard in Bay Ridge, the and will never change their northern terminals again. For argument sake, what if 39 St yard could be converted to a yard for the ? Strategic move switching the and for yard usage back in 87. does anyone have maps of the swap implementation back then? The 38 Street Yard needs to be brought up to code because only garbage trains(R127) and needs to be a interlocking at 9 Aveune for that to happen. You do realize it will just delay the trying to enter/leave the West End Line, right? After leaving 71st Avenue, an can be sent to the Jamaica yard for storage or repair in the shop if it's defected. Simple. Can't see why's that so hard. Trains get maintenance and inspect on a regular basis regardless too. They aren't just stored at the yard. They have used the 39th Street Yard for train storage about 10 years ago... http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?32392 I have no idea why they stopped though. Wallyhorse Posted November 22, 2014 Share #13 Posted November 22, 2014 My plan would do it, BUT that would also have the and switch southern terminals in Brooklyn as part of a plan that would have the become the Rockaway Beach line between Whitehall Street and Rockaway Park if that did happen (and ONLY if it did):In that, the would return to being the 24/7 Astoria Line as it was prior to 1987 BUT would also replace the on the West End to Coney Island so it would have yard access at Coney Island. It would run local as it does now from 36th Street northward. The would replace the at 95th Street since the does have Concourse Yard. It would move to the Express track at 59th and run express from there as it does now from 36th Street northward (including overnights). The would continue via Sea Beach as it does now BUT would be a local from 59th Street northward. It would also become the secondary line to Astoria, running there weekdays 5:30 AM-10:00 PM. The rest of the time, the would supplement the on the SAS and run to 96th Street-2nd Avenue to give the UES additional service late nights and weekends (by the time this would happen, the SAS would be operational). The would become the Rockaway Beach line and run from Whitehall Street to Rockaway Park, replacing the on Queens Boulevard (when needed for yard access, the can be extended into and from Brooklyn).Since in this setup the would turn off the QB line in Rego Park, the would go back to serving QB as well, with during rush hours and as needed otherwise the and both extended to 179th Street so as not to back up the going to the Rockaway line as there would be three locals on QB. There would be delays at Dekalb Avenue and 59 Street. Also, QB would be overcrowded. Plus you are taking away Sea beach express service on 4th Avenue and the Manhattan Bridge. The subway setup right now is with us until the end of time.
Q43LTD Posted November 22, 2014 Share #15 Posted November 22, 2014 I thought we were talking about the and switching Queens terminals, where the hell the to Rockaway Beach come from?
Kamen Rider Posted November 22, 2014 Share #16 Posted November 22, 2014 Wallyhorse: One he gets an idea, he never stops talking about it, no matter how overly complicated, hair brained or impossible (or all of the above in this case) it might be. The moment you bring in an at-grade double cross, you lose about 1/3rd your service capacity if not more. Yes, the R and N do that in the middle of the night... But that's the middle of the night. In this case, Wally's got the D crossing from Local to express at the same spot the N would be crossing from express to local and vice versa going the other direction. That is reason in and of itself to not mess with what works.
BxM4Woodlawn Posted November 22, 2014 Share #17 Posted November 22, 2014 Well this is all funny but I have another idea that involves Brooklyn and old times. Send the down 4th Avenue Express and the West End Line to Coney Island. Send the down local on the Brighton to Coney Island, and make the express on the Brighton Line terminating at Brighton Beach, and running weekdays only. Also if the runs to Astoria. Make it go there for a reason, the now runs Express on the Astoria Line during Rush Hours. All other times, it terminates at 57th St/7th Ave
RtrainBlues Posted November 22, 2014 Share #18 Posted November 22, 2014 Instead of switching terminals - It would be far cheaper to extend the late-night R shuttle to run from Whitehall-95th or Atlantic-95th so that passengers could transfer from the #2, #4, A, F, and Q trains late night (without waiting for delayed D and N trains that miss the R shuttle at 36th/59th by one minute.) ConcourseExp Posted November 22, 2014 Author Share #23 Posted November 22, 2014 oh yeah, i forgot about that. Why were the and switched anyway? Because the wasn't providing much service to Bedford Park Blvd and many people thought it was reasonable to take the . And the line couldn't accommodate all those trains into 174 Street Yard. And anyway, congrats, you just send a part-time line over to the West End Line and overserved Brighton with two full-time lines during the night. And you basically have a shuttle to Atlantic-Barclays via the West End Line at night, without through service to Manhattan and the Bronx via the full-time . Just nice indeed.
