Collin Posted May 2, 2020 Share #6530 Posted May 2, 2020 I think one reason the Jamaica/Coney Island swap happened so much faster than the swap is the fact that it is a much simpler route and can be done while trains are in service. An R46 could just run down to CI in the morning rush, go out of service, and come back into service as an . The same was true for R160's going to Jamaica. They could put Coney Island based R160's into service as trains, which would go to Jamaica Yard after completing their runs. As was also mentioned, they swapped some cars by running them on extra trains. With the swap, R62A's had to do a very complex set of moves to get from the Flushing Line to Westchester Yard. Corona Yard-Hunterspoint Ave Hunterspoint Ave-39th Ave 39th Ave-Atlantic Barclays Atlantic Barclays-Concourse Yard Concourse Yard to 86th Street 86th Street-Westchester Yard For moves between divisions, how does it work with the train crews? My understanding is that normal train crews aren't qualified to work on the other division, so they would either have to change crews, or use work train crews who I believe are qualified on both divisions.
m2fwannabe Posted May 7, 2020 Share #6531 Posted May 7, 2020 The first mumbling can be discerned about starting storage car dispositions. Evidently NYCT is setting up a Silk Road Transport (or whoever) agreement to begin removal of surplus R-32 and R-42 equipment very imminently. Maybe already? You never know how far this might go with other equipment as well.

danielhg121 Posted May 7, 2020 Share #6533 Posted May 7, 2020 Isn't Silk Road Trucking going bankrupt which is why MTA had to find another company to truck cars away?
R10 2952 Posted May 7, 2020 Share #6534 Posted May 7, 2020 (edited) Seems rather odd to me that they would contract with a company based all the way out in Steuben County instead of closer to home. That and the fact that it's by tractor trailer on the road- way more inefficient than what the MTA used to do. In the '80s, new cars and those returning from GOH came in by rail, and the cars being scrapped were sent out by barge to NJ. Economy of scale. Collin Posted May 7, 2020 Share #6535 Posted May 7, 2020 In terms of removing old equipment, I don't think anything was more efficient than the reef program. Load the cars up 50 at a time and dump them. Whether it was good for the environment or not is what's questionable, and why it was discontinued. As far as delivering new equipment, I'm not sure why new cars aren't delivered by rail anymore. It last happened with the R142's. Are the rail lines once used no longer active?
R32 3838 Posted May 8, 2020 Share #6536 Posted May 8, 2020 I don't even know why they're bothering with getting a scrap contract when the first R211 isn't even here yet. they're gonna have to remove R46's as well when they retire. It makes no sense.

There are few suppliers for the specialty service required. Another similar company has been engaged by others (China Rail Car Co. known). The ecological advantages of Reefing failed to overcome the political opposition in some locations. Plus the much higher cost to properly prepare (strip) the car bodies. NYCT last removed subway equipment to Sims Metals (Newark) in 2013 by Silk Road Transport specialty "cradle" (flatbed) trailer via the GWB in reverse.

This is just a guess, but maybe because the is still suspended, they don't need as many sets in ENY temporarily. When skip stop is in effect, the combined run every 5 minutes, but I believe they're only running every 8 minutes now. So for now the can use their extra trains and have a more uniform fleet with 480 foot R179's.
