But as far as I see it, you can't retire the R32s yet because you'll end up with a car-shortage again. The best you can do is move them to another line (the line maybe, as one of the rush-hour put-ins that drop out at Dyckman St or 168 St during the AM and those that go to Rockaway Park in the PM (which drop out afterwards). This way, the R32s assigned to the only make a total of one trip per day (half in the morning and half in the evening, similar to how the R32 did on the when the Brighton Line was restricted to local-service only.

First, according to the MTA documents, 1486 cars (1250 in five-car sets) are getting CBTC for QBL, leaving about 40 cars for CI, @Union Tpke has also stated this somewhere in this thread. CI is going to need every R46 that they get from Jamaica. Second, I agree that some R32s should stay, but as a reserve fleet, mainly to be used during rush hours. If they get rid of them, they’ll probably make the fleet requirements really tight. Honestly by the end of this month, we should know the fate of the R32s, 122 cars is still a considerable amount of cars in-service. At this point let’s just see what happens.

While out getting my final rides I ran into that same NIS 46, had a chat with the conductor who then explained the r46 are definitely making a comeback to the C.

darkstar8983 Posted February 7, 2020 Share #5536 Posted February 7, 2020 It's going to be interested how the remaining R160s at Coney Island will be shuffled (if at all) considering that the majority of the will be suspended. Last time the was running shuttle service south of Kings Highway, an R68A made an appearance. It would pose the perfect opportunity to swap all the parked R160Bs to the for the weekend (to sideline the R46s) and the R68As to the + R46s to the . And for those who are FANS of this swap, see more Alstom propulsion R160Bs go to Jamaica

trainfan22 Posted February 8, 2020 Share #5545 Posted February 8, 2020 I'm assuming the 32s will be assigned to the Rock Park specials..? If not I have a feeling those 32s would be running off peak and weekends like they always have been. If they wanted to retire the 32s before the 211's arrive, they had no choice but to run R46s on the again.

There would still be a need for the R32s because the reason the R179 contract was made primarily for 8-car units was because the R32s and R42s were running on routes that use 8-cars (480 foot trains) as opposed to 600 foot cars (like the R44s which were retired prematurely due to structural integrity issues). Coney Island Av Posted February 8, 2020 Share #5547 Posted February 8, 2020 okay so today there were about 6-7 R32 sets in service. cant believe that MTA actually decided to change their mind about the 46s being banned on the and im glad the 46s are going back to the . its a bit sad that today is probably gonna be the last of the 32s on the , but ive had my time with them and im satisfied. the day the 32s retire i will be filled with a bit of emotion as these are the last RFW cars and the main subway cars i have grown up with from when i was baby until now going on 16 years of age. additionally, i caught one R32 set on the during the PM heading to lefferts but there could have been more out IINM. personally i dont understand why the MTA is trying to get rid of cars before the 211s are even on property. yes they will retire at some point but we dont even have any 211s on property atm. also, the total number of active R32s in service is now up from 122 to 128 (138 counting refuse/work trains). 3468-3445, 3446-47, 3818-19 are still in service as of today, i saw that set on the like a few others did.
Lawrence St Posted February 8, 2020 Share #5548 Posted February 8, 2020 MTA is really confusing. First they want strict non-75 foot 8 car trains on the , then they want R46's on the , then they ban them from the , and then bring them back again. Why not just use the R32's and make them into a 10 car set and call it a day? This uncoupling and coupling of the R32 units is a waste.

NewFlyer 230 Posted February 8, 2020 Share #5550 Posted February 8, 2020 They want R32’s off the ? I’m not even sure if I actually buy that at all. They will probably continue to throw them on the until they officially retire. The R179s are not stable yet so anything can happen between now and the arrival of the R211’s.
