Was never a fan of them being removed on the Cuomo 160s. Corner is a prime spot for folks to handle their business
m2fwannabe Posted January 3, 2020 Share #5177 Posted January 3, 2020 Aging is beginning to outpace the fleet's required needs and that's more of a historical fault. Not much anything can be done to reverse the sands of time. And its not feasibly to temporarily use buses instead like on some systems, eh? Hopefully some people won't make foolish mistakes that they would very much regret and soon. No easy of cheap fix until the R-211s are born and show how well.

But yea there was a way smaller fleet of 38’s. There wasn’t any problem with the 38’s as far as I remember, probably would’ve fared better than the 42’s. Both the R38s and R40s were in bad shape towards the end. Extensive roofline corrosion, leaking during rainstorms; the frames under the bonnets didn't look too great at that point either- General Electric and Sumitomo just didn't do as solid a job as Morrison-Knudsen with rebuilding. If more SMEEs had been kept, likely would've been more Phase I R32s and MK-rebuild R42s. Everything else (or so I was told back then) was already dead or dying at that point.

Since 2016 the has gone downhill similar to how 2001-2004 was with the route swaps 2016 - Sea Beach Reconstruction begins 2016 - train returns but means fewer trains outside rush hours in Astoria and car shortage is noticed. 2017 - Astoria Stations begin Construction 2018 - 4 Av Express tunnel begins repairs 2019 - Astoria Blvd closes & train is cut from Stillwell Av 2019-2020 - loses almost all R160s for the worst performing subway car (outside the R32) if they still did the state of the subway report card, you’d see the at the bottom of the list again like it was in the 90s and early 2000s

So here are the second 3 for 2 swap (ended January 3): 24 R46 transferred (#2) 5546-49 & 5674-77 to CIY on Dec 23; 5534-37, 5566-69, 5590-93, 5842-45 to CIY on Jan 2. 20 R160 transferred (#2) 8148-52 & 9198-9202 to JYD on Jan 2; 9118-22 & 9478-9482 on Jan 3. Understand that the R160s can only be moved that they are "QBL (Thales?) CBTC accepted and enabled" of how many are complete for the road, we have yet no idea. The early pattern is the 3 by 2 swap once per month (ca first Monday?). If that were the case the whole process would require about a year and a half, but time will tell. danielhg121 Posted January 4, 2020 Share #5193 Posted January 4, 2020 Wait I thought the entire swap was mostly being done by coordinating the layups of F and R trains. The set that transferred today was running not in service, isn’t that a waste of money? Couldn’t they just have it be a pull out from Avenue X?
Iron Valiant Posted January 4, 2020 Share #5194 Posted January 4, 2020 I’m a puzzled here. Doesn’t the train use 10 car trains? 5538-5542 can be a five car set however 5543-5545 only makes three cars while 5546-5547 aren’t at Jamaica Yard. Do the R46’s work differently than the new tech trains?

Most likely: Depends on where the cars that are ready to be moved, as in already together at both facilities. BOTH R160s sets CBTC ready on one side and in a proper inspection (as in desired mileage status and/or mechanical status) going over to CIY. If both sets were so lucky to be at Coney Island and didn't actually need to be transferred, CIY (likely) wouldn't do that unless they received their own initial inspection while the R160s would (likely) require its own inspection by JYD before just dropping a "stranger" equipment into the to get to Queens in the first place. For DCE Mega CYA is more important than saving a few cents against light transfers.

m2fwannabe Posted January 4, 2020 Share #5198 Posted January 4, 2020 Again a new subject: We have a list of 20 newly retired R-32s at 207, presumably to be batched processing (stripped) for scrapping soon. IF this is done as the last time so around 2010 and the reefing before that, all were dismembered at Tracks 11 & 12 inside the Main Shops. Lets see how this works. It appears a guess so far will entail 20 cars per work for 4 weeks (that would be the 80 cars as widely circulated). Interested in the specific car numbers or is that TMI?
