DJ MC Posted January 10, 2013 Share #1 Posted January 10, 2013 [float=left][/float]Amtrak's fiscal 2012 operating loss was the lowest in nearly 38 years, which is a sign of progress, Joseph Boardman, the railroad's president and CEO, said Thursday. The $361 million loss for the year ending Sept. 30 was down 19 percent from the previous year. The last time Amtrak losses were less was 1975. In a conference call with reporters, Boardman also laid out an agenda for this year that includes delivery of the first of 70 new electric locomotives and 130 long-distance passenger cars, expansion of the Acela Express high-speed service in the Northeast with an additional New York-Washington round trip, and beginning the work necessary to acquire new high-speed trains.Read more: Source

So I bet probably 2014? This will be for the DC AEM-7s. Then the ACs and finally all the HHP-8s.
MTARegional Bus Posted January 10, 2013 Share #8 Posted January 10, 2013 I don't know why Amtrak exists... they can never make money. You think that private railroad company's would have done any better? they were dying like fly's before Amtrak was created. That's Why Republican hate trains, they rather built more roads for cars then trains.

In fairness though Amtrak has lost more passenger trains under democratic administrations compared to Republican administrations. Carter and Clinton come to mind there. Amtrak itself was created by a Republican president (Nixon).

Quill Depot Posted January 11, 2013 Share #15 Posted January 11, 2013 Why does being a republican or democrat matter? Can we all learn to work together. Then making the assumption, republicans hate trains. What the hell... what has our country gone to.

Far Rock Depot Posted January 11, 2013 Share #18 Posted January 11, 2013 if you separate the NEC with the rest of the network, the NEC could survive alone IMHO. Just my opinion. Not basing it on any numbers.

Then making the assumption, republicans hate trains. What the hell... what has our country gone to. well republicans weren't exactly interested in working together for the past few months. Instead they have made repeat attempts to thwart obama's efforts to fix the economy. Only with extreme pressure are they working together. However not all republicans hate trains true. However this day and age IDK. if you separate the NEC with the rest of the network, the NEC could survive alone IMHO. Just my opinion. Not basing it on any numbers. sad thing is your right other corridors just didn't get the attention and funding that NEC did to become profitable or close to it. Most other corridors were neglected. And allowed rail service to deteriorate to 1 train a day 4 trains really puny schedules.
Quill Depot Posted January 11, 2013 Share #20 Posted January 11, 2013 This is all biased... republican or democrat... I don't see why anyone should give a shit about it. We are talking about losses for a railroad.
Far Rock Depot Posted January 11, 2013 Share #21 Posted January 11, 2013 Its biased yes, But its fact if you followed the news since the first Bush administration (H.W.) like i have, youd see the pattern. George H.W. Bush® cut funding. Former NY Gov. Mario Cuomo gave the MTA funding to bring the subways up to a state of good repair. In the 90s, President Bill Clinton committed to High Speed Rail (with the help of a majority Democrat Congress) and gave us Acela Express and started funding FOX (Florida Overland Express) Newly elected Florida Gov. "Jeb" Bush killed the FOX project. See the pattern? Its not all the Republicans, but its the majority. Its all about the Benjamins. Not necessarily about trains in general. But an electric railroad would hurt their pockets. Less people driving. If HSR, ran on electricity, dominated the nation, Oil companies, (where gasoline comes from) wouldnt be profitable (which most Republicans have stock in *cough* BUSH! *cough*). See how Trains DO play a factor in politics. Look at all the Bills based on transportation that Congress votes on and how they are voted depending on who is the majority. It sucks yes. But this is con that goes with the pros in a democracy.

Carter and Clinton come to mind there. Amtrak itself was created by a Republican president (Nixon). Both Carter and Clinton had a majority Republican Congress at one point didnt they? Carter was a one term president during HUGE national fiscal crisis. Cant really blame him there. Clinton started the foundations for 2 HSR networks (FOX and Acela). FOX got killed off by Gov Bush. Acela is about to go Second Gen. (under the foundation from the Obama Administration ) If anything, Nixon and Reagan were 2 Republicans who werent against rail. kentsfield Posted January 11, 2013 Share #23 Posted January 11, 2013 Reagan was not a fan of rail. Lautenberg did the same song and dance in the 80s defending amtrak against a reagan backed dismantling plan as today. Most americans outside of the NEC find rail to be distastful, disgusting to their way of life. CATO cats like randall o toole find cities so abhorrent they've spent their entire lives lobbying against cities. Anti rail people in California seriously have tried to propagate the nonsensical idea that catenary power lines are going to somehow irradiate miles and miles around the track. Now your really delusional. Ever heard of the Auto Train and Empire Builder? Or better yet the Silver Service. May want to think before you post. Also the Blue Water and Wolverine travel at 110mph in the Midwest. Can't forget about the Surfliner out in California. Advice do some research before you post, cause the lack of thinking before posting just makes a user look so damn stupid.
