Shortline Bus Posted May 14, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 14, 2011 30 years ago a movie that featured the NYC subway and a then unknown subject to the US 'terrorism' was featured in a movie starring Sylvester Stallone. Although not an international smash or legendary like his other famous movies of "Rocky" and 'Rambo' this is a critically accamiled film. Stallone plays a Vietnam War Vet turned NYPD cop who assigned to a multi-national anti-terrorist squad designed to capture an Eastern European Terrorist played by Rutger Hauer. It's a film made ahead of it's time IMO. Billy Dee Williams co-stars as Desilva(Stallone)partner. Has anyone ever seen this film? Some of the best scenes are attached here. Guys if you a NYC subway or want to see the Big Apple looked like 30 years ago, this is a must see. part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CqbtO3Ox8U&feature=related *part 7* featuring R1/9's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmMG4nw9u7Y&feature=related part 8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmMG4nw9u7Y&feature=related part 9 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CqbtO3Ox8U&feature=related With so many remakes I am surprised Hollywood has not remade this 'cult' classic. RailBus63 Posted May 14, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 14, 2011 I remember when this film came out. It was considered once of Stallone's post 'Rocky' and 'Rambo' flops because it didn't do well at the box office, but I enjoyed it. The idea of terrorism on American soil wasn't too far-fetched because we had been seeing similar types of bombings taking place in the U.K. by the Irish Republican Army, and indeed the film starts with Wulfgar blowing up a London store and angering his sponsors. The anti-terrorism scenes with Nigel Davenport were strong, as was the cop duo of Stallone and Williams, and Rutger Hauer played a very effective villain. And the ending is absolutely terrific if you are seeing the film for the first time (don't let anyone give it away to you). From a subway fan's point-of-view, while it was fun to see the IND R-units make an unexpected guest appearance, it would have more plausible had a more modern train of subway cars (cleaned up, of course) been used. It almost seems that the choice of the Independent units was based on their having the large window on the storm door, thus making it easier for Stallone's cop to kick out and gain entry into the train. Shortline Bus Posted May 14, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted May 14, 2011 Very true. Other than Rocky I, this is maybe Stallone's best movie of his career. The issue of International Terrorism was a subject only thought of with Hollywood movies like this in 1981 as say the use of cell/smartphone. Science Fiction. When my sister took me to see this film in 1981, I did not understand the topic and as a little boy back then more wanted to see the NYC subways/scenary. A film ahead of it's time.
