BUS - Random Thoughts Thread

You think that's bad?? A friend of mine had the M60 on the hawk. He said they give him 22 minutes to get from 126th and 2nd to 106th and Broadway dark. But only 15 minutes to get from 106 and bway to 125th and 2nd...

Sometimes I wonder who makes these paddles. One op who I showed the paddle to was like jesus they must want you to go down riverdale ave like a 7 (opposed to going all around kappock)

The thing is though, there really isn't much traffic at that time. It takes maybe 5 minutes from Kappock and Johnson to say 239th & Henry Hudson Parkway East. It's just a matter of whether you have slow @ss passengers getting off or on, or rather prima donnas. If you do then it could take more like 10 minutes for that little stretch. However, I can see your point. The service roads are rather narrow, so even with very little traffic you can only go but so fast. They should add a bit more time to the schedule. The hybrids seem to do okay coming up Riverdale Ave on the Bx7 and decent as well coming up Johnson Av as Bx10s, but still. Question for you though... I rarely see the O5s on either line except usually on weekends. Do they try to keep those buses off of those lines due to the hills or what's the story?

Dude I'm telling you even with no traffic there are some parts that you can't just go as fast on. I found myself being held up mostly in part to a great model motorist who parked their new BMW X6 at an angle and a few inches past the "No Standing Anytime" sign right where the bus turns on to Independence street...major PITA clearing the pivot point by only a few inches...after last night I can truly say that I have become a better driver lol.

As for the NG > O5...It's usually cause the senior guys who do those lines just don't like those buses and also the fact that there are a lot of elderly people who use those two lines which equates to it being more feasible to run a low floor on that route. IMO they (Orion V) are far better than the hybrids as they are more...."predictable" for lack of better a better term. They stop when you want them to stop, don't have a 2,000lbs battery on the roof so you can turn them at a decent speed with out getting a massive lean and possibly throwing the customers from one side of the bus to the other, acceleration is very good (subject to on par maintenance), responsive steering etc...

I've been seeing O5s all over the M100 recently, that's good news to me. Those CS buses were pretty well-maintained coming in, looks like KB has been taking care of them too. Also been seeing a lot more LFSAs on the 100, but I guess with the recent ex-WF buses coming in there isn't as much of a push to keep LFSAs on the 9.

Well yeah that's the other issue.... Double parking... I was going to mention that but that usually isn't an issue that late at night, but yes that or the yellow taxis that get lost up there (lol) can make for a real PITA. I've had yellow taxis and lost motorists alike asking me for directions late at night since there are no street grids up there.

I didn't want to start a new thread but this is actually quite interesting and would like to know any more information..if possible:

Bx5 LIMITED

Was there really a Bx5 Limited variant? I honestly can't picture this as to me it doesn't seem as if the 5 needed any kind of limited service.

Today, A B/O on the M3 skipped a stop, Another B/O on the M5 told him, and the B/O on the M3 said "I don't give a crap, It's my last day here."

Bx5 Limited is a new one to me...

^ Huh? Museum bus or regular fleet? Oldest bus in the fleet is 101 at about 17 years old. Oldest museum bus has to be the double-decker 303, that's 95 years old.

Regular fleet

Interesting... An M3 bypassed a bunch of us the other day by 14th street and some of us boarded the M2 and caught up with him. I got on at 23rd and Park Av South asked him why he bypassed the stop. He said because there is a rule and that he was going to pull the bus in front of the M2 that was already there. I said the only rule that I know of is that there's a stop there and you're supposed to stop there and furthermore it's funny that you were going to pull in front of the M2, but you kept going. Then he goes well you all got on the M2. I said the M2 is limited and you're local so how could you assume that we all wanted the M2? Let's just say it became a very heated verbal exchange. It was clear from his actions that he had no intention of stopping and that's what pissed me and some other passengers because he was trying that riding empty crap and then trying to excuse his actions when he knew very well what he was doing and just didn't expect to be busted.

He had one passenger on his bus when I got on and then another guy caught up to him at 27th and Madison and also asked him why he had bypassed his stop and asked for his badge number and they had some words as well, but nowhere near the words we exchanged. Perhaps if we would've apologized it would've been let go but he was cocky as if we were so dumb that we couldn't see what he was up to.

The Q113 will no longer serve Nameoke St and Central Av. I saw a poster for it today

Yep.... I just posted what I thought of that Here

Sad story though, I'm on the B62 and this really hot girl is next to me and after a couple minutes she turns to talk and of course, I'm expecting the holy proposal itself...turns out she was asking how to ring the bell since she couldn't figure it out. I think my face dropped nice and quick on that one. Then she presses the tape and she gets all excited when the bell goes off. Killed me.

Tough break.... at least you didn't get some punk rocker chick w/ multi-colored hair that came from the middle of bus to the back of the bus (I was the only person back there at the time) to ask if the B62 goes down bedford (this was a downtown bound bus, so the answer was no, which I said..... then told her she had to get off & walk a block over [she wanted grand/bedford])... You don't know how sick I am of people asking me for directions.....

I don't ever see any hot chicks on that bus.... of the ones that look to be around my age range, it's either the (corny, hipster) types, the drunkard types (that chick I'm talkin about above reeked of booze btw), or the gutterbunnies (aka hoodrats) further on down the line.....

I really hate the new Q35 layup spot. Today the Q35 was on Nostrand av and waited there before finally turning onto Av H 10+min later. I get the need for a break, but damn it, my transfer was going to expire soon, hurry the hell up! Most other times I get to Av H it's like the b/o can't drive out of the area fast enough...

Last couple times I took the Queens bound 35, it's been from the flatbush/av S stop.... I just take the B46 to the Q35 now, instead of taking the (2) to the Q35.... At the new stop, it's somewhat hard to tell who's waiting for the bus or who's just gallivanting around the mall.....

Will bus time update at 12:00am for the S79 SBS?

Yup. You put in S79, and it doesn't show anything. You have to put in S79-SBS

@MHV: Yeah, that reminds me of the time a girl around 11 years old or so walked on the S62 (I don't even think she knew she had to pay), and she asked a guy sitting in the corner how to signal the bus to stop.He gave her a funny look and told her to pull the cord when the bus is almost there. (It didn't matter anyway because she got off at Richmond Avenue, which is a major stop)

^ Shouldn't be happening with grown women though!

Swear to god, nobody knows where they're going in this city. I can deal with tourists in the city but you get people who were just too lazy to find out where they were going, that's their own problem. I still answer but just amazes me every time, people fine with spending money to go somewhere without even knowing where the bus/train they walked into is going.

This time I was on the bus for the whole ride from LIC to Fulton so I got the whole crowd, you got the map of chicks down pat. The LIC/Greenpoint crowd's always closest to normal, Williamsburg the hipster stuff just seems silly, Park through Gold St. all I think of looking at some of the women getting on is this old Chris Rock routine about black vs. white pornstars, black pornstar got like a gunshot wound in their butt, let's just say it wouldn't be outta place with some of the types. This girl was an anomaly, not hipster or hood or any of that...but criminally stupid. Always something.

Eh, I guess they're just sympathetic. A couple of times, I've seen limited B/Os stop at a local stop to help out a senior.

I checked out the SI Advance article out of curiosity (I figured if it's the first day, they'd definitely have an article on it), and it's amazing that they make this seem like a bad thing. One of the captions says "The Select Service on the S79 route has eliminated a whopping 53 stops, leaving some stretches of the route without a stop for nearly a mile." Like yeah, that's the point: To speed up the route, and it's not like they have absolutely no service. They just have to transfer from the local.

“In 2010 Mike Cusick allowed the MTA to reduce Staten Island’s local bus service from 22 routes to 20. Now thanks to Mike Cusick’s creation of red bus lanes, the S79 will no longer be a local bus route for Staten Islanders”, stated Pirozzolo

“The new S79 bus service will further hurt the commute for Staten Island workers, seniors, and our middle and high school students. Mike Cusick has once again missed the mark when it comes to improving transportation for ALL”, exclaimed Pirozzolo

Well, considering the only route that was completely cut was the S60, and it was replaced by the S66 on weekdays, you can't really count that. Weekend service was lost on the S54 & S76, but the route itself still exists.

Yeah, the S79 won't be a local route. It'll be a limited route, which benefits the majority of it's riders.

And SMH at some of those comments. No matter which way you slice it, SIers love to complain.

To be fair, I don't really see the point in having the bus lanes by that part of Richmond Avenue. The traffic in that area doesn't seem that bad, and they do have a point that it will result in some people having to make tight turns. But I guess we'll see when the route gets into full swing in the coming months.

On a side note, it seems as if Google Transit doesn't have the SI buses listed. I typed in 92nd & Fort Hamilton to the ETC, and it said to take the (R) to the ferry and then take the SIR (when obviously the best route is the S79). I typed in an intra-SI trip and the same thing happened.

Maybe cuz they always pick that run...

Nah, I switch up a lot and apparently these guys do too. The guy I had on the BxM1 this morning also does BxM2 runs on the weekends too. I was wondering who I was going to have this morning and I see this guy and I'm like I had him just a few weekends ago on the BxM2 and prior to that he's done BxM1 runs. I get him a lot even though I switch up a lot using different lines at different times. Sometimes they're as shocked as I am because with Yonkers they try to move around the drivers a bit more and some folks stick to one line, while others like myself flip flop between the three lines depending on where they're going. For example, I've had the same driver coming to work and going home with the following scenario... BxM2 into the city and the BxM18 going home. I chuckle when that happens too because it happens more often then you would think.

The problem is there are only a few routes and you're bound to get the same drivers at some point even with them moving around the way they do. I think only the real old timers tend to get runs where they keep them for the entire pick out of Yonkers and even then they swap them out quicker I notice. You'll get a regular driver for a week or two or maybe a month or two if you're lucky and then BOOM, new driver... With these guys though I get them at different times of the morning on the weekends, so I guess they may move around but again, only so many runs on the weekends out of Yonkers. Interesting depot, that much I will say.

It depends on how the run itself is set up. You may be doing one route one day then do another one the next day

Yeah I know... With the Riverdale routes esp. it is easy to go from one route to the next... Once you go up to Riverdale, you can come back down as whatever. For example, at least one of BxM18s at night come back as a BxM2...
