Those who either have a suspicious receipt or don't have one at all get escorted off the bus and cited. If I'm not mistaken my mom once told me that an entire River LINE train in NJ had to be taken out of service because so many passengers didn't pay their fares before boarding. Perhaps the same could happen with SBS buses? Probably... I wouldn't necessarily say it would go down.....but the surprise inspectors makes things hilarious! One time I was on a Bx41-SBS heading towards the hub....and when we got to Webster/Tremont, the inspectors were there and the operator was like "ALL TICKETS PLEASE!". The minute he said that, almost the entire bus ran out of the bus trying to avoid the inspectors to no avail....since there were cops too.

They were not checking bags either because no tables were out.

I do know farebeating is way worse in the Bronx.

From what I've seen even on the local buses, most people pay. In the South Bronx however, the lines that I've used on the local lines, fare beating is rampant. On the express buses, it's not really such a problem in the Bronx or in Riverdale, though in Riverdale, we have a few regulars that are elderly that may just slip some change in. They may feel entitled to ride at a discount.
trainfan22 Posted December 20, 2018 Share #25357 Posted December 20, 2018 The damn SBS machines at Utica/ Ave H Kings Plaza bound are not even on and at the time the next 46 local was way in Crown Heights around Atlantic Ave, so I had no choice but to take the SBS without paying. Oh well.

It would be ideal to station fare inspectors on each and every bus in the city to deter farebeating, but that's obviously out of the question because it would be way too cumbersome and expensive. On the other hand, the five stations along the Dyre Avenue line are certainly breeding grounds for farebeaters late at night when the booths are closed and nobody's watching. And I've seen it happen infinite times whenever I take that train to work early in the morning or to arrive home late at night--some loafers from the street just jump over the turnstiles to take a joyride on the train despite the overhead signs saying "To enter customers must pay fare at turnstile at all times." And don't they realize there are cameras watching them too? Anyway, here's a more feasible way to discourage farebeating on buses: making every passenger enter and exit through the front door and locking the back door--though I have to admit this would only work for non-SBS routes.
Orion6025 Posted December 20, 2018 Share #25359 Posted December 20, 2018 While we're sharing farebeating stories.. I was waiting at Jerome for a Bx18 bus down to the towers, one bus was MIA so a huge crowd built up on that tiny block. When the bus pulled into the stop, it was largely empty with only a few folks on board (Something like 6-8 sitting IIRC). By the time all of us made it on board, the bus was absolutely packed right up to both doors and i guarantee you no more than 15 people boarded through the front

Taking into account its lack of dependable service and low ridership numbers, that bus is terrible Edited December 20, 2018 by lara8710

Taking into account its lack of dependable service and low ridership numbers, that bus is terrible From what I see, it serves two purposes: firstly as a supplement to the Bx40/42 in serving river towers. It flows more or less decent along Macombs road and if you're coming from manhattan and get lucky, you could save time riding the 18 as opposed to riding up to the 40/42 (which have their own reliability issues too). The majority of riders get off at the last stop before undercliff avenus. The second is that it serves the apartments/houses (and some shops) along Macombs Road and that tiny section of tremont avenue. Though it's not that much, this section of the 18 is basically what keeps it alive (not in the usage sense, but the fact that it's basically the only unduplicated section of the route). The short Tremont avenue section is also moderately hilly so the seniors may struggle there. As for university avenue, it's technically a unique section but buses were getting empty by that point. And sedgwick is basically a ghost town

Deterring farebeating is fairly simple. Step up the blitzes and people will be on guard. There's no consistency so that's why people are having a good old time not paying. Why pay when you can ride for free? Aside from that some people justify it by saying that service is horrible so why bother. It's also becoming rather expensive. It used to be an easy decision when I had short weeks. I would simply buy a pay-per-ride, but now sometimes I get the pass anyway because if I ride for four days and take say two more rides, it's almost the same thing. $13.00 a day... That is basically part of a decent lunch. Add a snack and drink and it's $20.00. Not too far off...
