Mysterious2train Posted June 29, 2017 Share #16151 Posted June 29, 2017 (edited) Not super familiar with car technology, but since some R160s have been retrofitted with interior LCD screens, how feasible and expensive would it be to attach LCD screens on front of the NTTs to display the bullets? Similar to the R211 rendering (presumably) and around the same size as our older cars. Edited June 29, 2017 by Mysterious2train
Daniel The Cool Posted June 29, 2017 Share #16152 Posted June 29, 2017 The only time an R142 ever runs on the is during New Years Eve because of the enormous crowds. Not entirely true. They ran one for a PM Rush Hour back in 2014 due to an incident and had to borrow a Train layup.

You also may have to move around some of the equipment behind the fiberglass to fit the LCD screen and related equipment. A better idea would just be replacing the current red LED sign with a multicolor LCD one.

You’d have to reconstruct the front bonnets of the cars and more than likely and would require some rewiring to connect to the CPU. Funny enough probably easy upgrading a car type like a R62/68 with the glass front. But retrofitting For The Interior LCDs is abit easier they really just sit on the flip side of the route signage and protrudes just a bit. Bit of wiring and a passthru in the voids in the window spaces at the cars end. The current Red LED’s are pretty visible do you think they need to be replaced? What about upgrading The reds for a full color LCD/OLED? The space is already there and wouldn’t require any cutting. Plus R143/R160 classes man that’s quite afew cars. Tech And Transit Posted June 29, 2017 Share #16155 Posted June 29, 2017 (edited) Guys was riding the this morning and I passed the R142A/R188M that has the led rings, and the first car towards Hudson Yrds (7509 I think) had a completely new sign which was all orange. Sign seems to be in (mostly) working order now lol. Edited June 29, 2017 by Tech And Transit
Around the Horn Posted June 29, 2017 Share #16156 Posted June 29, 2017 Sign seems to be in (mostly) working order now lol. ooooooo I like that! I'd just modify the font a bit to replicate the mosaic LCD font (which I think is easier to read when its working properly) but that looks good.
Lance Posted June 29, 2017 Share #16157 Posted June 29, 2017 I do wonder why they went with a segmented display here though. Seems pretty unnecessary to me.

I would've thought it would've been made similar to the R160's sign.
Lance Posted June 29, 2017 Share #16159 Posted June 29, 2017 It's almost like they just replaced each of the 19 visible LCD matrices on the original 142A sign with individual LED displays.
Lawrence St Posted June 29, 2017 Share #16160 Posted June 29, 2017 Tbh it looks blech to me. >.< I like the led indicator for the signs, but instead of doing this, just fix up the old signs so they don't glitch as much.

Lance Posted June 29, 2017 Share #16162 Posted June 29, 2017 I think they will have to eventually replace the 142 era side signs at some point. Those LCDs are never going to last as long as the trains themselves. The Pocatec signs on the 142s are faring slightly better, but they tend to just blank out at times as of late, beyond the standard refresh flashes that is. The Luminator ones on the 142As/188s are in worse condition with parts of the matrices either stuck or simply non-functional. I think part of the reason is because those signs do not refresh and therefore are always on. I'm not surprised at their failures though, given their age.
danielhg121 Posted June 29, 2017 Share #16163 Posted June 29, 2017 A lot of the time, they leave them on during the night at the yards, they should tell their conductors to turn them off. I believe it leads to many failures of the signs if they are always on. Sent from my iPhone using NYC Transit Forums mobile app

Its not empty space Sent from my LGLS755 using Tapatalk Yep I was fully aware when I made the comment. I’ve been inside a NTT cab afew times The CBTC equipment should be to the left of door on the floor away from the drivers console. Wired down thru the floor to the axle to the Ctbc beacon reader. At Least That Was The Provisions as I Remember. A newer OLED with no more thick backlight is what 2.5-3.5 inches deep? Unless the wayside radio equipment is in the bonnet, fiber glass can be RF absorbent or transparent depending on the material mix. So not sure if they went that way But things can be moved. Is it cost effective? prob not but it’s possible. R32 3838 Posted June 30, 2017 Share #16167 Posted June 30, 2017 24 R42's transfered to fresh pond yard. The M shuttle will be using R42's instead of R32's. Makes sense in a way

R32 3838 Posted June 30, 2017 Share #16169 Posted June 30, 2017 But I thought the shuttle didn't start until September? They have to transfer them now so this way they don't have to truck them in. Remember the myrtle ave curve is being taken down starting in july. Its better to transfer the cars before the work starts

Around the Horn Posted July 1, 2017 Share #16172 Posted July 1, 2017 Would anyone happen to know why the GTFS data in the Transit app is showing via Broadway/West End and via 8th Avenue/Culver from 2AM July 4th to 1AM July 5th?
Calvin Posted July 1, 2017 Share #16173 Posted July 1, 2017 I don't know if this is early to tell but the shuttle may be 6-cars per train by the looks of it today at the Yard.
Jemorie Posted July 1, 2017 Share #16174 Posted July 1, 2017 Either four cars or six cars since the R42s are married pairs.
