bknightshadow45 Posted February 16, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 16, 2011 While I was surfing the web I came across this video from 1983. This report is from WNBC-TV New York Live At Five.

bknightshadow45 Posted February 16, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted February 16, 2011 You should have said "from 1983, derailment' or something because on the main page all i saw was "subway train derailment...' Thanks for the advice. I already changed the title.
Joe C Posted February 16, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 16, 2011 The system must've been in bad shape for there to be 13 subway derailments.you hardly hear anything like that today,(even though they can happen.)

MTARegional Bus Posted February 16, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 16, 2011 Hey! One of the Grumman Flxibles! Oh the irony. But that's deferred maintenance for you, things didn't start to change on till the mid 80's, even to this day we are still fixing the subway's problems that old TA and the city from the 60's and 70's didn't take care of.that why we have so many weekend service changes. Princelex Posted February 16, 2011 Share #9 Posted February 16, 2011 I've watched this clip many times and it never gets old to me. It's something to see what NY was like in 1983. It was a VERY different place. It was cool to see the old cars that used to be on the , the Grummans and even the RTS. What a time I tell you. Princelex Posted February 16, 2011 Share #10 Posted February 16, 2011 Oh the irony. It's something to see that they were able to start rehabbing the subway cars jacked up from that period of time but they weren't able to rehab them Grummans seen in this clip. That's for another topic but damn.

Nova RTS 9147 Posted February 17, 2011 Share #13 Posted February 17, 2011 You can also add many class one railroads too. Like Penn Central. The 1970s wasn't kind to any of the railroads at all. Tell that to BART.

Nova RTS 9147 Posted February 19, 2011 Share #16 Posted February 19, 2011 Fremont Flyer. A small esoteric event doesn't make for a bad decade. Especially considering BART was built and in ways, thrived in the 70s.

Nova RTS 9147 Posted February 19, 2011 Share #18 Posted February 19, 2011 train goes racing off the end of the track, off an embankment and into the parking lot. that stopped being small at embankment. What is your point? That one incident that resulted in several injuries that no one really remembers made the 1970s bad for BART? That sounds like a bad point. Nova RTS 9147 Posted February 19, 2011 Share #20 Posted February 19, 2011 point is BART was not immune from problems. The teething problems it's automation system had, of which the Flyer was just one, must have made getting the trains moving a headache some days. then there was the fire the closed the tube for 4 months in 1979, killed a fire firefighter and lead to a $120,000 seat replacement program. Fair enough and you're right. My overall point is that BART was one of the few TAs in the country that actually prospered in the 1970s.
