here are the differences between like pairs:

R40 & R40M

-The R40 had a slanted front

-R40M had a more "modern" front, and look more like the R42's.

R40M & R42

-The R40M: storm door-- notice the tall bulkhead window on the door, the floor is tan & the seats are a little shorter.

-the R42 had a small square-ish storm door window. The seats are a little higher, & the floor is black with speckles.

the R44 & R46

-the R44 had the westinghouse propulsion, and sounded more like an SMEE. The front rollsign was lower than the R46.

-the R46 had the GE propulsion, and the rollsign was higher. also there were alot more than them.

that should help .

Without getting into mechanical differences that only a very small handful of people on this forum will actually understand...

This thread specifically said "VISUAL" differences between the cars, so...

R40M:

60' length, corrugations in car siding are spaced close together and go halfway up the car, rollsign readouts appear "separated" by the metal sheet cover (as viewed from inside the car)

R42:

60' length, corrugation in car siding are thicker and spaced further apart but still go halfway up the car, rollsign readouts are all covered by the same pane of glass (as visible from inside the car)

R44:

75' length, carbon steel stripe down the side of the car (which appears slightly lighter than the rest of the car which is stainless steel), digital LCD side sign displays, window guards inside the car next to the seats nearest the doors

R46:

75' length, siding is all stainless steel so car siding appears a uniform color, digital LCD side sign displays, NO window guards inside the car next to seats near doors

The R44s also had much skinnier storm doors, but that's in the inside. Most of the external differences have already been covered.

No, the storm doors on the R44 and r46 are the same. It's the cab door on the R44 that is narrow and swings open into the cab. On the R46, it slides open and looks like the storm door on the B end of the car.
