Joel Up Front Posted January 24, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 24, 2011 I know at least the R46 has those springs hooked to the door of the car, but what about the others? How can you tell between the four?
Roadcruiser1 Posted January 24, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 24, 2011 The car numbers R40M's had the numbers of 4450-4549 R42's has the numbers 4550-4949 R44's had the numbers 5202-5479 R46's has the numbers 5482-6258 An interesting thing is R40M's, and R42's did run in mix sets before. IRT Bronx Express Posted January 24, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2011 All R40's were '60 footers, the same for the R42's. R44's were '75 footers, the same for the R46's.
4P3607 Posted January 24, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 24, 2011 here are the differences between like pairs: R40 & R40M -The R40 had a slanted front -R40M had a more "modern" front, and look more like the R42's. R40M & R42 -The R40M: storm door-- notice the tall bulkhead window on the door, the floor is tan & the seats are a little shorter. -the R42 had a small square-ish storm door window. The seats are a little higher, & the floor is black with speckles. the R44 & R46 -the R44 had the westinghouse propulsion, and sounded more like an SMEE. The front rollsign was lower than the R46. -the R46 had the GE propulsion, and the rollsign was higher. also there were alot more than them. that should help . SubwayGuy Posted January 24, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 24, 2011 Without getting into mechanical differences that only a very small handful of people on this forum will actually understand... This thread specifically said "VISUAL" differences between the cars, so... R40M: 60' length, corrugations in car siding are spaced close together and go halfway up the car, rollsign readouts appear "separated" by the metal sheet cover (as viewed from inside the car) R42: 60' length, corrugation in car siding are thicker and spaced further apart but still go halfway up the car, rollsign readouts are all covered by the same pane of glass (as visible from inside the car) R44: 75' length, carbon steel stripe down the side of the car (which appears slightly lighter than the rest of the car which is stainless steel), digital LCD side sign displays, window guards inside the car next to the seats nearest the doors R46: 75' length, siding is all stainless steel so car siding appears a uniform color, digital LCD side sign displays, NO window guards inside the car next to seats near doors
N-Trizzy2609 Posted January 24, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 24, 2011 Also when a R44 is in station, it tends to hiss and spuewing sounds like silent farts while R46 make more of low pitch buzzing while idle. The R44s in SIRT were built more like R46s since they were built later so they also buzz in the station.
Dynamic Vaudeville Posted January 24, 2011 Share #7 Posted January 24, 2011 The R44s also had much skinnier storm doors, but that's in the inside. Most of the external differences have already been covered.

No, the storm doors on the R44 and r46 are the same. It's the cab door on the R44 that is narrow and swings open into the cab. On the R46, it slides open and looks like the storm door on the B end of the car.
PATCOman Posted January 24, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 24, 2011 The armrest on an R46 is similar to the R68, and the R44's armrest is different. The exterior side of an R40M is similar to an R40 slant, while an R42 is different.
