INDman Posted December 28, 2010 Share #7 Posted December 28, 2010 Is it true they were going to have the R68s with blue race stripes on the sides? No, but the R62s were supposed to come with the stripe.

QM1to6Ave Posted December 28, 2010 Share #12 Posted December 28, 2010 what was powering this car? I don't see a third rail or anything.
T to Dyre Avenue Posted December 28, 2010 Share #13 Posted December 28, 2010 Those aren't pantograph gates. They are baloney springs. Up on top? Those are pantographs. The railcar is operating off of overhead wires.
Roadcruiser1 Posted December 28, 2010 Share #14 Posted December 28, 2010 A trolley pole attached to a trolley wire. They do the same thing in the Seashore Trolley, and Bus Museum. They did it to the R33's themselves. On another note this was only for testing. Later on they refitted the car, and delivered it as a regular 3rd rail subway car. I also highly doubt they are baloney strings look closely, and you realize it's a pantograph. Here's a picture of a pantograph. Compare it to the thing attached to car 2502
'89 Liberty MCI Posted December 28, 2010 Share #15 Posted December 28, 2010 My fault. I was referring to a different part of the car's anatomy by mistake.
St Louis Car 09 Posted December 28, 2010 Share #16 Posted December 28, 2010 R68's had pantographs:eek:?The pantographs were retrofitted since there isn`t a third rail on the test track.
bstar1 Posted December 28, 2010 Share #17 Posted December 28, 2010 Pretty cool!!! It's nice how the bullet is on a white background. I agree the white background does look nice, so why did they change it to black.

metsfan Posted December 31, 2010 Share #20 Posted December 31, 2010 Wow. Then again i'm not too overly surprised: HBLR and NCS run on overhead wire 750 volt DC. If i'm not mistaken, LIRR uses 750 volt DC 3rd rail, with subway 600-650 volts DC 3rd rail depending on how far from the substation you are. Theoretically the subway could be converted to DC overhead rail (wires would not work due to their fragility and clearance issues) if they ever got tired of working near a live conductor on the tracks. - A
