mass production Posted June 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 8, 2010 LOS ANGELES - McDonald's is recalling 12 million drinking glasses it is selling to promote the new "Shrek" movie because painted designs on the cheap collectibles contain the toxic metal cadmium. The fast food chain said early Friday that it wants customers to stop using the 16-ounce glasses, which have been sold for about $2 each and were available in four designs depicting the main characters from the animated movie. Cadmium is a known carcinogen that research shows also can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems. In the case of the Shrek glasses , the concern would be long-term exposure to low levels of cadmium, which could leach from the paint onto a child's hand, then enter the body if the child puts that unwashed hand to his or her mouth. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37503835/ns/business/?GT1=43001

R10 2952 Posted June 9, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 9, 2010 This is ridiculous. To think that America, of all countries, subsists on goods imported from abroad... The most epic FAIL in history, if you ask me. This is just like what happened in Poland in the early '90s, when many of the factories closed. There was a time, not so long ago (about 25 years ago), when you could go out onto the street, and the majority of the cars you saw were domestic models (this was the case in both the United States and Poland.). SMH This is what happens when you want to save money and avoid as much labour costs as possible. In the end you are going to screw everyone up. Look - that means fewer jobs available here. Higher employment here. We have to diversify our economy, we can't just have it all service. Also - the money that is going to the factories abroad go into the pockets of the employers. Little money goes to the employees. And the employers are bounded by corruption, especially in developing countries.
