  1. Wondering out loud here, when if ever have the MCIs been repainted? I know the 1800-2000s got repainted at some point, hence the whiteback buses and all, but have the 2200s/2700-2900s ever been repainted? Those Safety's My Goal stickers have gotta be at least six-seven years old, begging the question if those are the ones that came on the bus.

  2. I don't think checkmate gets it that public transportation is supposed to have a level of COMFORT to it. Even the local bus and subway. People are NOT attracted to crushloaded buses and subways. There's a point where you turn people off and that's another point he doesn't get. There's a point in which you go overkill with trying to "maximize" ridership.

For once, I agree with you. Efficiency and rider enjoyment don't always go hand in hand. The subway has always been and will always be the efficient route. The bus comes into play when there's either no subway service, the bus is more direct, or the bus is more comfy. For me, morning rush hour I pack myself into the 6 train every day. It's not fun but I get to sleep a few minutes later. On the way home, I take the bus cause it leaves me closer to my apartment and cause it's a little more relaxed overall. For my family, the older folks in the family all swear by the bus now since it doesn't have the rush and bustle of the subway. I'm young enough that I don't mind that crush loaded 6 in the morning, but I do prefer a mostly full and slightly slower bus all the time. And then for the older folks, they do mind a crush loaded train, and so they take the bus.

My point is that yes, in some cases the bus is a matter of necessity with no other transit options, but in a whole lot of cases the bus is a little bit of a more relaxed way to travel. And if you make every bus run at maximum efficiency (read: packed), you lose that second reason for ridership.

  3. Updated as of 1:20 today... Due to the issue with the 2002-03 D60HF Thermo King HVACs, There is Five [5] CS 5900s at MQ and Seven [7] CS 5900s at KB, the rest are at CS where they should be. Also, due to the frequency in which these 5900s have been moving and since they are loaners only, the roster reflects them being at CS as they will be back at CS by the end of the weekend.

I think they're gonna be staying longer than that. As posted 5911 is still there, and I'm on 5917 right now (loudest bus I've ever ridden, these new HVACs must mean everything's different).

  4. ^ Was just by ECH, surprised I missed that. Those 5370s and 5380s all lined up are a real sight though.

Interesting seeing more 6000s going to ECH, makes sense that they're sending RTSes along with QV to LGA to push out some of the oldest RTSes and Bee-Lines.

Correction on a post I made a while back (teach me not to trust SubChat), 9206 is still over at FP.

  5. Is there a reason MJQ is getting CS' LFSAs?

I'm gonna quote Blitz cause he explains this better than me:

I hear that they have been having problems with a lot of the Thermo King HVAC equipped LFSA's. They say the alternate is not charging the batteries because the fans are drawing too much voltage...

Quill's LFSAs obviously are all Thermo Kings, so that's why they're taking on artic loans, not having enough buses to make service. I think they've got four loaner LFSAs now.

  6. does anyone have an idea where 14th street traffic comes from?

    1. It's the only two-way cross street from the East Side to the Meatpacking District

    2. It's the two-way cross street through Greenwich Village

    3. It has major intersections with Ave A, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Broadway, Park, 5th, 6th, 7th, etc.

    4. It's only four lanes across, with two lanes of major traffic

    5. It goes through Union Square, packed with people

    6. It goes through Stuy-Town, packed with people

    7. It goes through the Meatpacking District, packed with people

    8. It leads to the West Side Highway

    9. It leads towards the FDR Drive

    10. It's packed with shops and stores on all ends

    11. It leads to the Highline, a huge attraction

    12. It passes many schools, filled with people

    13. It passes hospitals, filled with people

    14. Its crosstowns connects with every full up-down Manhattan bus line

    15. It's filled with double-parked trucks, vans, and police cars

Ya get the idea here? There's traffic.

  7. 9496 is running out of MHV today, not sure if Quill sent a bus.

Here's what I don't get: if 126th sends an RTS every day to MHV to be pulled out by an MHV op and go into service on either the M1, M2, M3, or M10, why don't they just leave one bus at Manhattanville. Every one of the loaners gets driven back to 126th by an MHV op, and I don't get why that time is even spent. Just leave an RTS at MHV, or, if service is too tight, have Quill leave a bus (cause they send one almost every day as well).

  8. I've crossed there plenty of times on my way to networking events at La Maison Française and I don't see what's so "dangerous" about that intersection. <_<

It's a blind cross if you're going south on 5th across 8th, and that's why today's scene happened and why've there've been a bunch in the past too. I've seen personally seen (in recent memory) five buses crash or have smaller accidents at the intersection with cars, bikes, or people, it's not somewhere to go without looking.

  9. Any of you are ever in the Village, gotta be careful crossing 8th st. at 5th ave. My mom used to always tell me this back when I was a kid, finally saw proof of what she was saying today. M3 just hit a middle-aged man from what I saw of him, not a very happy scene. Ambulance just left, I didn't see any blood so hopefully he's alright, looked awful for everybody around though. The B/O looked like he was gonna have a nervous breakdown, felt awful for him but I'm not sure whose fault it was in the end. Hope everybody's alright though.

  10. Rode a Bee-Line for the first time today. Can't believe it took me this long, but I've just gotten OGs and NGs and RTSes every other time. Got 102. And I have to say, I'm sure of them are really messed up, but this thing ran perfectly. Ride wasn't too bad, crucially the A/C worked, and the bus had plenty of power even going uphill. I'm surprised at you, LGA! Really good bus.

  11. ^ Gotta say I miss East FB too, used to spend my summers there. Good place and knew a lotta alright people there, haven't seen everybody in years now.

Surprised at how hard I'm laughing at Key & Peele. Show's been really funny, just watching the first two episodes, and Vandaveon and Mike I'm practically crying. Comedy Central'll never match the Chappelle Show for sketches, but this is some good stuff.

Stupid but funny... 1:18... "black people ain't meant to be in the sky!!"

Another quick pretty amusing one, the phone call:

  12. Its bad enough that, as an M14A rider, we have to wait two 14D's on average to every 14A.

At best! I've had it midday, waited 25 minutes for a 14A, saw seven 14Ds go by.

So I'm not the only one that notices that.... that's one of the main reasons I don't walk over to abingdon sq. to catch the 14a to hit up that pizza hut/taco bell near union sq. for lunch anymore...... they don't come as often.... but I sure do see artics parked randomly along hudson st b/w the south side of 14th st & 12th st where it terminates (for anyone that knows the immediate area, that's not a 2 block span either.... it's about 4 or 5 blocks)...... When M11's are arriving and leaving at around the same rate as 14a's, that should tell the story about 14a service right there.....

The 14A at Abingdon is a mess. I've stood there and had not one, not two, but three runs missed. First guy was a noshow, second two came off layover just to go NIS. So you end up standing there (this happened twice) for a good 45 minutes trying to get a bus. Only way I've ever been able to cut a break is by knowing some of the ops, so they let me on while they're deadheading to 6th and then I get to avoid the wait. Should not that be that messed up though on such a basic route, especially when everybody's just sitting there on break while runs are being missed.
