  1. That plan has its pros and cons. Nassau St sounds good on paper, it would send the Downtown with minimal construction and re-vitalize an underutilized line, but the stations would need to be an extended and apparently some condition with the earth makes a connection to Nassau St unfeasible. The Manhattan Bridge is a no-go, just trying to figure out all the spacing would be an academic exercise. Rutgers sounds nice, especially with the impending completion of the Culver rehabilitation. But, the Lex line gets pretty packed in Lower Manhattan (with people coming off the Ferry at Bowling Green and people coming off the at Fulton St heading uptown, and going down there to work from Uptown/Bronx, and vice-versa in the evening) Sure, the as planned won't actually connect directly to the ferry or the .... but I think it's still important to serve Lower Manhattan. I wouldn't rule out the idea of a quick connection to another line, though. Especially since an outer borough on the 's own trunk line really is far-off. I wonder where the Transit Museum would go in such a case.
  2. I can understand the pros of a "semi-express" like what SAS is supposed to be but at the same time the lack of capacity I think will be really problematic down the line. I can understand why it's being two-tracked, with money constraints and all that, and maybe one could make the argument that as long as Lex trains aren't overflowing, the SAS is successful and I guess that's true to an extent, but that's kinda setting the bar low, isn't it? Personally I think the lack of stops at places like 50th St and 79th St and a potential stop like 61st St is doing more harm than good, but who knows? I guess it's not so bad, since the and M15 stop at those places, but that kinda goes against the point of SAS, doesn't it? Unrelated, I understand the idea of a Hanover Square station as being in-between Wall St and South Ferry, but at the same time the lack of a station at South Ferry would no doubt be inconvenient. But I guess the walk won't be too far. If you're wondering where Hanover Square is:
  3. Busfan problems: Of course, I always hear an RTS, or a C40LF, or an Orion VII...
  4. Sucks that it has to come to this, but why not leave provisions for express tracks in a tunnel underneath? This way, express tracks can possibly be built in the future, like on 6th Avenue. Even if it takes 50 years, that extra capacity will come in handy.
  5. It does seem logical to run the R32s on the , doesn't it? There's even a bonus for the foamers. But I guess there's some catch, or else the would've done it already. Does the consciously want to keep the R32s underground during the harsher months? That's the only reason I can think of against putting R32s on the .
  6. If I'm not mistaken, the current plans call for the tracks at Grand St to be built below the tracks with no physical connection. Granted, Phase 4 isn't coming around any time soon, so there is time for plans to be changed...
  7. I just took the AP World History a couple of days ago, I think I did okay but at the same time I think I bombed one of the essays... The day after the AP, my class had to take a practice World History Regents because our school was selected for some program. Needless to say, nobody took it seriously and we were just causing a ruckus the whole time. By the way, how does the structure of the US History exam differ from the World History exam? Or are they the same?
  8. The Q7 to Green Acres might be kind of a crazy idea but I do think there should be some route from the West to Southeast Queens, along Rockaway Blvd or something. I mean, right now you can't really get to the Southeast without going through Jamaica. I don't really see why that has to be the case.
  9. The line is supposed to be 2 tracked the whole way from 125th St to Hanover Square. 72nd St station was supposed to have three tracks but is now going to be two tracks as well. (See here) Opinion is divided over whether or not the lack of express tracks will screw over the line in the future. (I definitely think so. Lines like the Flushing and Pelham lines today, could definitely benefit from being four-tracked and having bidirectional express service, but at least the isn't leaving out express tracks because they don't see the value of them.) Irrelevant, but the "Tracks of the NYC Subway" book actually has a track map of the Second Ave subway as planned (from Lex-125th to Hanover Square) in all of its two-tracked glory. I'd scan it, but I lost it and have no doubt it's in a landfill somewhere... The online track maps don't have this little 'sneak peak'.
  10. A program called Inkscape. http://inkscape.org/ Inkscape files are known as SVG files. They're like PDFs in that when you zoom in, the image quality stays the same, unlike in pictures where the image quality worsens. Unlike Gregor (who also makes his maps on Inkscape), I can't really find a reliable place to upload PDFs, so I'm stuck posting small screencaps for now. I'm using a blank version of the Brooklyn Bus Map I cleaned out myself, right now we have blank bus maps for all 5 boroughs available to draw routes on.
  11. Click on the image to make it a little bigger... The Q57, runs between Church Av/Nostrand Av (Church Av ) in Flatbush, Brooklyn and Woodhaven Blvd/Hoffman Drive (Woodhaven Blvd ) [Queens Center Mall] in Elmhurst, Queens. Turns around in Queens using the Q11, Q21 and future Q52's congested turn-around route. I don't know where to have it turn around on the Brooklyn end. Runs non-stop between Pennsylvania Av/Fulton St and Woodhaven Blvd/Myrtle Av.
  12. Just rode Orion VII 4248 from Yukon on the B44. It felt pretty weird riding it, it still had the SI Bus Map, the depot sticker, and a S53 Bustime ad.
  13. That "new" announcement you're thinking of actually the old announcement, from pre-2004. I have no idea why it's still there. To see more old announcements, see here
  14. I was thinking about the as well, for those rare times when it's sent to South Ferry. But I don't even know if an actual program to South Ferry exists, so wanting an announcement about the M15 at South Ferry would be getting ahead of myself.
  15. At the height of its service during AM Rush, the has about 18 TPH (it running that often at all is news to me, but whatever) so the can't exceed 12 TPH.
  16. I'm hoping the will update the NTT announcements to announce the transfer to the M34/M34A SBS at 34th St soon, but given how long it took the R160 announcements to get updated with the M15 SBS (I don't even know if the R142s have them, but I doubt it) it'll probably take a while.
  17. Me yesterday (after the fact) http://www.quickmeme.com/meme/3p5k6t/ Also relevant: http://www.quickmeme.com/meme/3p5k9x/ (How can I post the images directly?...)
  18. Going uptown yes, it can switch from the 6th Av express to the local track right after leaving Broadway-Lafayette, but going towards Brooklyn it's not possible as no such switch exists between the local and express tracks.
  19. With only two tracks, the Second Avenue line is supposed to be a sort of "semi-express" - Notice how there's no stop between 72nd St and 86th St either.
  20. There probably won't be any service to Queens Plaza anytime soon, it seems like the doesn't want to fund it (hence the ending at 57th St for weekend GOs) The should be split like others said, Coney Island to Whitehall St and Ditmars Blvd to Lexington Av or 34th St. The could go to 57th St, and the could be re-routed up 53rd St via the line. Ideally, the could still be around and the will be the only casualty (During the two IND Fastracks, the ends early, which actually kinda sucks for riders; the and ending early isn't as bad) I guess it depends on the scope of the closure, since the Broadway line is pretty flexible in that regard. I was wondering why the 8th Av Fastrack is from 59th St down to Jay St while the 6th Av fastrack is only from 59th St to W 4 St. I'd imagine it's because 2 Avenue and East Broadway (and the other 6th Av stations below West 4th St to a lesser extent) are kinda hard to reach without the . IF the closure stretched down to Jay St, I'd imagine the would end at World Trade Center, and the might possibly run express instead of local to have traffic run a little bit smoother) That last thought was kinda foamy on my part, I'd love to see R160s on the 8th Ave Express...
  21. To clear things up I wasn't really referring to people taking the Bx33 from the train station. It's only a block and a half (or a little longer depending on which building you're going to) from the train station to the Campus so there's no real reason to take a bus, especially since . I was intending the Bx33 mainly to feed people to the subway, and perhaps steal riders from the Bx15 and 19 (which are both slower, no contest). The end at Broadway would be mainly to connect the two sides of St. Nicholas Park. The route actually does get a fair amount of intra-neighborhood usage. I do agree that people coming off the subway from points North might not be too eager to switch to the Bx33. The transfer to the is pretty desolate and the transfer to the isn't that much better. After trying to cut weekend service in 2010 I'm betting the is more than willing to cut the Bx33 in the future and push people onto the 15, 17, and 19. Irrelevant, but there's no shuttle bus from CCNY to 137th St currently but there are shuttle buses to 125th St and 145th St http://www1.ccny.cun...-Route-2010.pdf (That map's outdated, right now the green route heads back to the train station on Convent Av, not Broadway).
  22. Leaning towards no. The Bx19 has good service, but it's just pretty slow. Instead, we should focus on improving the Bx33. This Bx33 extension idea is pretty straightforward. It would turn around using Hamiliton Place. That could be a problem, there isn't really space for buses to layover. The last stop from the Bronx would be either Broadway & 135th St or on Hamiliton Place off 137th St. The first stop to the Bronx would be at Broadway & 138th St. The Bx33 is short, and its headaways suck. Plus it stops dead at St. Nicholas Av. At the very least, it should run to Broadway. Now it can directly serve City College Campus, and West Hamiliton Heights. The 33 isn't as frequent as the Bx15 or Bx19, but it doesn't really run into as much traffic as they do. In fact, I think the Bx33 could make a good feeder route to the and . Right now, people coming from the area who need the usually backtrack on the to 96th St and people who need the generally take the M100 or M101 to 125th St. I heard a few people in my grade take the Bx19 all the way over to the , which I think is crazy, but I guess some commutes work. The Bx33 could save some real time. It would need more service though. Imagine that, extending a route and giving it more service, probably not the most economical solution is it?
  23. @ the Q112: Why? As long as the Q53 is around, any local route running to Rockaway Park probably won't be too popular. Especially if it runs through Lindenwood like the Q21. @ the Q113: What're you talking about? It's kind of unclear. The Q113 runs no where near 147th St. The Q113 LTD as is is pretty good getting on Rockaway Blvd, and what's the point of moving the Q113 Local? Even if you meant 147th Av, I don't know what you mean. There should be a Green Acres - Brooklyn/Queens route. Seems like the common consensus is to reroute the Q7, but something would need to replace. I saw this idea but using a branch of the Q6 to replace the Q7 to the Cargo Terminal, but I don't know. I've seen people suggest to send the Q7 to Green Acres Mall and to Rochdale, if the Q7 to Green Acres stops at Rochdale it has to go slightly out of its way but it's arguably worth it for the access from the West. I mean, right now, Rochdale, Rosedale, and Green Acres, a lot of their service comes from the North (Jamaica). Rochdlae has the Q113 to the South and Green Acres has NICE to the East too, so why not a route from the West? Also, there should be a Q53 express like the old days, if only during the summer season. The ridership is there, no question. I do agree that the Q9 should be extended down 130th Av to the sanitation office at 150th Av to provide access to Jamaica, but I don't know how the Q10 would fit into all this. I saw this grand paln to reroute the Q9, Q10 and Q37 in the area, but it's quite complex.
