  1. The N21 would do better if it was extended further east in Glen Cove up Forest Ave instead of ending by the police station in the ghetto part of town. It could continue to Locust Valley, terminating at the train station.

That would help, also consider all the major shopping centers & supermarkets in Glen Cove are up on Forest Ave where there is no bus service. It's quite f*ed up really, Glen Cove is probably one of the most messed up towns on LI transportation wise. I would not be surprised if local cab companies bribe elected officials to keep the buses off Forest, as they do quite a brisk business with the stores there.

Why do both routes end a the police station anyway? Could it be because that's how Glen Cove wants service?

  2. I wouldn't go that far. It's a route that works and gets some riders. It has been a part of the area for many years. During Long Island Bus times, it did well during rush hours.

Sounds like you may be interested in my n6 proposal.

    The Articulated buses?

That's right, the n27 is hourly now. I don't blame NICE for doing it, since the n23 extension to Hempstead because a north-south route from the n20 to Hempstead, but at the same time, the n27 should have more half-hourly service in my opinion. Some of the n27 buses I've been on did have a good amount of passengers during the midday.

Also, not part of the NICE discussion, but I saw this on SUNY Albany campus: [pic]

By making the n27 hourly, they probably extended service with one additional bus. Interesting pic

  3. That n6x runs a lot smoother in the morning. NICE made the headways 7-8 minutes instead of 10-13. I thank them for that, they at least improved SOME service. The buses have more room and are less packed. The trip is smoother and surprisingly shorter as well. I haven't tried it during the PM yet but the good service compared to the n4x's dismal 15 minute headways.

Are those headways between express buses? Or between the N6 and N6x?

    http://web.mta.info/nyct/service/fastrack_EFMR.htm

    The QBL Fastrack is out

M service ends early between 71 Av and Essex St each night.
M shuttle service between Met Av and Myrtle av runs all night
Is service to Essex starting already?

The last fastrack went somewhat smoothly when I dealt with it. They should have signs at Roosevelt Ave pointing to where the (E) and(F)'s are. I went down to the Jamaica bound platform and was greeted to an (E) train leaving, when the (F) I needed was on the Manhattan bound Express Tracks, so I went up and over but missed that train also

  5. The (1) line fastrack is going to be a barrel of laughs tonight.

I work in the area, and this is due to a bank branch that basically burned to the ground - there are structural concerns and Broadway southbound is closed, at least until tomorrow. The shuttle buses are going to have quite ye olde traffic jam to contend with.

Are the (1) trains under slow order?

  6. On Northern Blvd it would help during rush hours. Sure, it may impact traffic a bit. But that should be reason for them to use the bus along Northern :P

But how come Hillside Ave has bus lanes? ( I mean, aside from the congestion, but I've hardly seen any non-SBS bus lanes in NYC, thus my question)

LOL are you QJ in disguise? Virtually no one on Northern Blvd sitting in traffic is ready to jump on to a N20 Bus if they haven't already.

Keep in mind when you all come up with these ideas that many buses travel on thru-routes and that those in vehicles are just using the road to travel east/west (or north/south) before heading to their actual destination, a bus isn't going to help if someone is driving to the north shore where there is no service, etc. Also , Northern Blvd is the northern most road that goes to Queens, and its the main, and essentially the only East-West road on the north shore west of Roslyn,  so it's somewhat of a choke point for traffic. Bus lanes are only going to get the town of North Hempstead's politicians kicked out of office.

Hillside Ave has bus lanes close to the subway because of the number of routes that run on HIllside Ave. I think they're only between like 179th street 188th streets though. For example, within that corridor you have the Q1, Q2, Q3, Q17, Q36, Q43, Q76, Q77, N1, N6, N22, N24, N26. in addition to people in private vehicles getting dropped off picked up at the subway and traffic just using the road.

From my observation of bus lanes in NYC  is that they suck, because the streets are usually bumpy and uneven by the curb,  when multiple routes use them, you'd get stuck behind buses boarding and alighting passengers. They're still somewhat effective because buses can leapfrog each other and it adds another lane of capacity for buses.

  7. Even though Transdev has had a financial loss last year, they might contribute to such a thing.

I m not sure how this has transformed into BRT but I never spoke about BRT. Simply adding a bus lane *here and there* and optionally some signal priority lights doesn t make it BRT. But yeah, fixing the lights will also help.

(also: I wasn't talking about the n6 alone with my idea, I'm sure a few other routes such as the n22 would also benefit from having a bus lane on crowded intersections)

Bus lane's wouldn't really be necessary in Nassau, There aren't many roads with more than 1-2 bus routes besides Stewart Ave. The buses don't run frequently enough to warrant a lane for buses only, the most frequent route is the n6 which is why some may think you were referring to Hempstead Turnpike. Although on second thought, parts of Northern Blvd does get congested. The N20 may benefit from a bus lane during rush hours, but that would heavily impact traffic even more.

As for the N22, Hillside Ave has bus lanes in Queens, but it's route in Nassau isn't heavily congested, besides maybe Old Country Road, but that's more of an issue during the holiday shopping season. Being that the buses no longer use East Gate Blvd to access the mall from both directions, its less of an issue also.

  8. and everytime I goes on the N6 I always see aleast one traffic lights on hempstead tpk broken

I just want to make sure you're talking about actual broken lights. There are several lights on Hempstead Turnpike that flash yellow, they're not broken, they're just not necessary unless there's a fire, its to stop traffic for trucks leaving nearby fire stations.

Heck fixing the lights alone would be a huge benefit w/o BRT. They are all out of sync and it not only delays buses but traffic too. They should be green at the same time!

Yes one issue is Plainfield Av/Elmont Road/School Road. Those need to be fixed. it causes unnecessary backups.

You know, if there was a joint effort perhaps NICE and each respective town could work it out to where NICE buses get signal priority via a transponder located on the bus.

The N24 would benefit, Jericho Turnpike SUCKS

  9. Once the N15 turns off old country (having came from RFM), it's pretty much smooth sailing (even for as long as the route is) - That has always been the case w/ that route... If old country is jammed, then N15's will be late - that's the biggest choke point on the entire route (the stint b/w [leaving] RFM & old country/[county seat (I think that is)]..... That explains why N15's are often early or on time by time it reached HTC.....

Is that why the N15 only goes to Old Country Road during the beginning and end of court hours?

  10. So whats the protocol for Conductors to make announcements of service changes or delays? Sometimes trains are delayed and they say nothing, or they say "train traffic ahead of us".

I mean it would be more helpful to us if they gave us more information, at least travel-wise. For example, If there are extreme delays on the express tracks it would be nice if they let us know BEFORE we leave a station so we're not stuck watching local trains zoom buy every few minutes. Courtesy to passengers is really what most of us desire.

There are times where I'm on the subway and there is crazy mess going on, and when I'm able to check MTA's website it says "Good Service", yeah ok..  a couple of months ago I was on a Jamaica bount (F) train stuck crawling to Forest Hills on the Local tracks, (E) and (F) trains were using the Local and Express Tracks simultaneously. At Roosevelt my (F) was on the Express and the (E) was on the local, they sent the (E) first then they sent my (F) behind it to go express on the local, we get stuck while 3 express trains zoom by! But when I checked their site "Good Service" ., their twitter mentioned nothing about it either.

  11. here the thought. During the QBL Fastrak, the ® will end service early in Queens, Now the Montague St tunnel is closed, who gonna replace the Broadway line to Whitehall? i think it will be closed between Canal st and Whitehall and do fasttrak there as well at same time.

There is no service there in the evenings as the (R) is just a Bay Ridge shuttle at night and the (N) and (D) trains go over the bridge. On weekends all trains use the Bridge because of the the tunnel work so there really isn't going to be a "change" in service it will be closed as "usual"

I guess a final disclaimer to remember: while listening on a scanner is legal, it's against the law to tell other people what you hear, and if you use a scanner to aid in committing another crime it's an automatic felony, not that your'e planning to. Just be on your best behavior while listening, don't interfere with the train crew, etc etc etc.

PM me if you have questions I used to listen to anything and everything on there in my younger days and it was often an amusing pastime.

Thanks! So If I hear "there's a train with door problems at the next station" i cant tell anyone on the train about that?

  13. It would make more sense to just wait for the Second Avenue Subway (T).........

Thats if the line makes it past 96th street :)

Or even simpler: extend the D under gun hill road and have transfers to both GH stops so riders can get from one part of the bronx to the other a little quicker than via bus. I think it'd be better off for 3rd av to be part of the SAS (even though it will be a while till that even crosses into the Bronx).

The (D) extension would be nice as well.

  14. If the money was there would it be feasible to run the (5) as the 3rd Ave line in the Bronx? Build a new line from 149th St up 3rd ave to Fordham Rd, then turn east along Fordham Rd to reconnect with the Dyre Line, continue existing service. Morris Park Station would be bypassed. Or the line could use E180th street to rejoin the line at E180th street or just south of Morris Park station.

  15. Which was established long, long ago...

Why exactly are you running circles 'round the debate on NST when it's over?

The Q43 (and surprisingly, the N22s) are usually fully seated, with standees on the 43 after Francis Lewis, and standees on the 22 crossing the county line.

Ok Because I usually see Q43's them during rush hour and evenings so I wasnt' sure how busy they are other times. Yeah the N22 gets good ridership.. Much of the ridership is between Roosevelt Field and Jamaica. I remember when I used to work by Roosevelt Field, in the evenings you'd see SRO N22's (and N15s) leaving the stop at Glen Cove Rd & Old County Road, The N24 was SRO sometimes to a lesser extent,  but people prefer the N22 because Jericho Turnpike sucks.

You do realize he said Nassau & Suffolk which means a bus to Manhattan is very unlikely to be used if they need to go to work in LI!

Q43 is that busy yes. And delays in Manhattan and LIE are much worse than the subway delays. Have you seen hillside traffic. Those use Q43 to go past to eastern queens.

Yep I've seen Hillside Traffic, it isn't that bad because there aren't a ton of traffic signals bogging it down.

  16. Wrong, some buses have programs other buses do not. Not all buses are programmed at the same time with the same program.

I meant that they probably use the latest program update buses as necessary but don't always flash ALL buses unless it's necessary. When they get new buses they probably just use the latest program which still have the N6L on them as there is no real reason to remove it.

The older ones probably have different displays and probably aren't updated as often.
