  1. How does Welded Rail work? They say it reduces rail failure since most failures happen at joints, but doesn't it make a fracture take longer to fix?

In the case of budget problems again, would the  (W) be cut like in 2010?

Speaking of which, wouldn't sending the (R) to Astoria and the (W) to Forest Hills , resolve issues with those lines?
  2. Fact is, those platforms are closed. The gates are locked. And more importantly, there's no C/R boards. If a c/r were to open doors with no board they are taken out of service. And a move like that doesn't fly in the subway. Simple as that

What happens if a board falls on an active platform?

  3. Where do I begin?

One,those platforms are closed. No conductor indication boards. Gates are locked. No proper platform edges. No proper lighting etc.

But here's how a move like that I'm would be done and why it never will:

Train pulls in opens doors. T/o moves to other end of train. Waits for the line up(signal) when a space is available(which it won't). Once clear of the original switch, T/O walks to the original end of the train and waits for the proper line up again.

If you think this is better than a 15 min wait, 1)you have a lot more to learn about operations 2)I got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

Hypothetically I was thinking of the train backing up on the local track to where the train originally was waiting, Then crossing over to the express track as usual.  And if the trains were held for 15 mins anyway then the the following (C) could have been held at Clinton Washington or something.

  4. Headways are one thing that won't allow that operation. As well as how long that relay would take to pull off. And those platforms are closed. Have been for years. Its actually quicker to just hold the train.

The switch is just east of the station how long could it take theoretically?

Please tell me you're kidding

if the train was held for 15 mins what's the difference? haha

  5. that's completely unfair and i really do not like that statement. just because it is a part-time or local supplement doesn't mean they should have passengers sitting in the train for a good 15 or more minutes just so a full time line can get priority.

Dispatching a railroad is difficult. And certain trains have priority. Do you know that the E has a high priority even on 8th ave? Unfortunately the C isn't high on the totem pole. Look at the B. It gets suspended when a major delay happens. At least with the C they'll adjust, reroute or split it before it gets suspended.

It would be cool if in that case the (C) could just pull into Hoyt Schermerhorn on the Local Track, let people cross over to one of the many (A) trains passing, then (reverse back to the switch and proceed to Manhattan when the coast is clear.

  6. Exactly.  The Q2 and Q110 are both jammed on Belmont Stakes Day.

The last time I took the LIRR back from Belmont on Belmont Stakes Day, I actually walked over to the Queens Village Station and took the Hempstead train back.  No crowd on that train at all.

I wonder if it would make sense for them to detour Q110's and N6's on Belmont Stakes day to serve the QV LIRR.

  7. Second day of QBL madness.

Just a fancy way of saying suspended...

Almost got caught in that today.  The MTA site said there were delays for a couple of hours prior to me heading to the subway but I figured I'd transfer to the (7) at Roosevelt Ave if necessary.

I arrived at the 179th street (F) station only for the passengers walking out of the fare control area to tell us  that there are no trains running between Jamaica and Manhattan, then the announcement was made over the speakers.

There were lines building for the Q43 and people confused about how to get to where they were going.  I got on a packed Q43 figuring I'd take the (J) or the LIRR. The whole ride I'm refreshing the MTA site to check for updates. When the bus got to Sutphin & Hillside the site said "Good Service" so I got off just in case because the bus was slow anyway.

Contrary to the MTA's service status, there were people streaming out of the Suphin Blvd (F) station saying that there were no trains. I walked toward Archer Ave overhearing people on the phone (ex/com)plaining that the trains weren't running. Then I thought, the LIRR may cross honor. :D

I arrived at the Jamaica LIRR station ticket area to see if they were cross honoring, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The site still said "good service" for (A)(C)(E)(B)(D)(F)(M) . Then one of the ladies announced that they were cross honoring, so I headed to the platform for the next train to Penn Station. Only once I got to the platform did the MTA service alert update to show that all "southbound" QBL trains were being held in stations,  etc.

    B-)

It would be nice to know that the trains aren't running before getting off the bus (so I could just stay on to the bus terminal), this is the 3rd time I've encountered this!

1st time was the (F) train derailment. ( Took the (J) Train)

2nd time was the "unauthorized" person on the tracks at 169th street. (that time I just took the (E) from Jamaica Center)

And I heard about yesterday's issues, it should be called the Queens BULL Line

  8. QBL has been a mess this morning.

Mechanical problems on the w/b express track between Roosevelt and Queens Plaza, and there was an incident e/b express at Roosevelt

I saw that service alert and avoided it. Whenever they say "allow additional travel time" on the QBL, make sure you avoid at all costs.

  9. If your talking about a specific car i would say its probably because the R46 it runs on are not in the very best condition. Work isn't going to be done on them, they would be fully replaced by R211s i guess. If not probably R160s.

Ah ok that would explain some of it.

how is the (R) train so slow exactly (in terms of speed between stations on a daily basis)?

    Yes

  10. If its like the Forest Hills clock, it shows all the trains at that station.

It was showing all trains. This was toward the front of the platform.

Ah ok, I was just checking because only the Broadway line had the working countdown clocks before (which also showed in the transit app)
